SUSTAINABILITY
Approach and Activities
Pumps used in industry use about 10 percent of global electricity. This figure of about 2 Terawatts (TW) and is more than the total of all renewable energy generated in the world. A small increase in pump efficiency will increase the energy performance of both individual products and the industry. This is where business should start with sustainability.
Pump systems are of critical importance in many areas, from water and natural gas coming into our homes to oil pipelines, from irrigation of agricultural fields to discharge of industrial wastewater. We are in a period when the entire planet is heading towards the disaster of climate change and world governments are desperately trying to reduce energy consumption. In an age where energy consumption is so important, it is clear that even a small increase in pump efficiency will have positive results as a whole. This change will have significant consequences for both the energy performance of individual products and the industry. The biggest motivation for making pumps more energy efficient is financial reasons. Approximately 90 percent of the total cost of a pump over its lifetime comes from the amount of energy it consumes. Making these essential parts of the industry more efficient can significantly reduce energy costs, which means significant savings in many energy-intensive industries.
Global pump manufacturers have announced that they will invest in more efficient and smart pump systems as part of COP28 and COP29. According to the plan, new technology and high-efficiency pumps will replace old and low-efficiency pumps, and global energy consumption will decrease. But unfortunately, the real problem is forgotten while new pumps are being produced. The truth is that a significant amount of energy is consumed to produce a new pump. Just think about the huge impact that extracting raw materials from mines, transporting them to foundries, processing, assembling parts and transporting them back to separate sites has on our carbon footprint. Extra energy is consumed to replace an old pump with a new one. In this period when we are now paying attention to sustainability, energy saving and carbon footprint, pump manufacturers are trying to produce more products and replace equipment that is already in operation, which causes a lot of energy consumption.
Let’s think about the question “Can we achieve higher efficiency with much less effort in existing systems for energy savings?”. Instead of replacing them with new ones, you will realize that it is necessary to evaluate existing systems through sound engineering practices, prefer performance improvement options such as smart controls, variable frequency drives, automatic control systems, new hydraulic designs, predictive and preventive maintenance plans, local spare parts supply. Local production of spare parts is also of considerable importance. Production in this way will save a large amount of energy wasted by transportation systems worldwide. As long as there is local production capacity and competence in the country of operation, it is very important for the original equipment manufacturer to expand its base of activity and localize production and use existing resources instead of adding another source of power loss from global energy sources in terms of energy saving.
This is what we are working for.
